The Island

  • Be amazed by the plane landing on our airstrip which is washed by the waves twice a day. It is a wonderful sight to see and one you will remember for a long time.
  • Walk along our beaches which have beautiful white sand and stretch as far as the eye can see.
  • Enjoy the sight of the machair in Eoligarry which has a yellow blanket of primroses in the spring.
  • Visit the Kisimul Castle in Castlebay, home of the clan MacNeil. The castle has been restored and is now run by Historic Scotland.
  • Take a tour on the island with Barra Island Tours
  • Take a picnic to Vatersay, which is accessible by causeway, and take in the glorious views. Meander over to the Annie Jane monument and reflect on days gone by when life was not so leisurely.
  • Call in the Heritage Centre and learn of island life in days gone by.
  • A day trip to the magical island of Mingulay is a must and should be booked in advance.
  • Try a game of golf, no queuing for a tee time here, or just have a walk around the course. It is a challenge which is refreshing and is also a wonderful opportunity for a spectacular photo.
  • Simply wander around the island, enjoy the wild flowers, listen to the birds and soak in the relaxed atmosphere, revel in the views and enjoy the local hospitality.
